Dogs are incredible creatures. They can take alot of pain without even showing that they hurt. My dog used to walk around like nothing was wrong but I could see clearly (maybe my sixth sense?) that she was in pain. When she wanted to jump on the sofa cushions and thought about it twice I would wonder what changed her mind. She showed alot of emotion in wanting to do it but even though she started she would stop alot. When I took her to the vet I realized her joints and bones were hurting from sleeping on hard surfaces. They told me to look into orthopedic dog beds to resolve this over time.
