One of the most interesting paintings by the popular artist Jack Vettriano is Dancer In Emerald, on first look it is a quirky image that shows a couple dancing as a third person holds an umbrella over them to keep the rain off. However if you look at the picture for just a little longer you can see that the third person is a butler and by implication the dancing couple his employers. The butler is hunched and he seems uncomfortable in the situation while his employers seem care free and safe in the knowledge that they will remain dry even in the bad weather. Is this a statement on how the workers are exploited for the comfort of the upper classes?
